Information on the Black Tail Deer and Habitat

The black tail deer live in meadows, wooded and forested areas across a few places in Canada and the United States. The guides and outfitters in those areas normally know the best places to go for trips or hunts. There are many different species of the deer family, which black tail deer are just one of, which represent some of the most attractive and graceful of all mammals that are hunted. Adult black tail deer are mostly some shade of brown, varying from pail gold to a very dark brown, just shy of being black, which helps black tail deer blend in their surroundings.

In the beginning of summer to as early as the first of spring the new antlers begin to form on the black tail deer. These antlers are of course what all hunters want to bring home from any trip or guided hunt. Each antler growing from a pedicel, which is a bony stalk located on the skull on the frontal part of the skull. In the growth process, they are covered with what resembles hairy skin, called “velvet”, which contains many blood vessels for the nourishment of the growing bone tissue. When the antlers have reaches it’s shape and size for this deer, the blood circulation in the velvet is stopped, the velvet starts to dry up, and the black tail deer {buck} then rubs the antlers on tree trunks and branches or just on small rocks, revealing the antler rack with no velvet. The time it takes to accomplish this is finished by fall, and the antlers will stay until winter, when they decay at the base and fall off, leaving only the hair-covered pedicels again.

Since black tail deer are plant eating animals, they feed on all manners of plant life, but especially on twigs and leaves of trees and bushes. On land they are noted for their speed along with their grace. In the water the black tail deer are excellent swimmers. They have an innate sense of curiosity and this can be to the hunter’s advantage. The guides and outfitters that offer hunts or trips for this big game animal will have advice to give if asked.

The black tail deer will mature in autumn normally. At this time bucks engage in competition to obtain the favor of the females. This also is the way they protect their harems from other bucks. The following spring the doe gives birth to one or two white-spotted fawns. These new fawns are carefully guarded by the doe until they are old enough to fin for themselves. In the winter months, some of the deer gather together in herds. They search for food in winter by herding together in one area. This keeps the snow to less depth, making it easier to reach the grass underneath.

Scientific Classification: Black tail deer belong to the family Cervidae. This deer is classified as genus Odocoileus, species O. hemionus.

Tips for Black Tail Deer Hunting

The black tail deer hunting tips shown below are just a few. The outfitter or guide that you hire will most likely have more if asked. Please keep safety in mind when on trips or guided hunts.

  • Tip One: Wearing cologne or other kinds of strong smells will give your position away and alert the black tail deer that your near. Most big game hunts like this will require you to not wear cologne if you wish to have a successful hunting trip.

  • Tip Two: When possible, hide your scent. You can do this with a number of products or items. The easiest is just rub animal droppings on the souls of your boots. The guide or outfitter you hire may have other ideas as well.

  • Tip Three: Unless you have something like a walkman that you can plug an ear piece in, don’t bring anything that will make noise. This will also give away your position to the deer. Even if you have ear plugs you should keep the volume down.

  • Tip Four: You want a good hunting stand that is sturdy, and doesn’t creak. It should have good supports. Most black tail deer hunting guides and outfitters will have this in place, but make sure that are of good construction.

  • Tip Five: Even though you are taking steps to hide your scent, you should be aware of breeze ways and not catch yourself being set up in the middle of one.

  • Tip Six: Make sure your stand is set up where you can see all around, not to mention as far as possible. After all you want to be able to see the black tail deer coming.

  • Tip Seven: Make sure that if you bow hunt, you paint your arrows a bright color so you can find them if you should miss.

  • Tip Eight: Practice with your bow several days in a row before you go hunting. You will be grateful you did. The outfitter or guide that you hire may be able to set up a firing range for you to practice in before your hunt.

  • Tip Nine: When possible place feed out so the deer will come back to the place more often. This isn’t always possible, but does help if you can do this over a period of time before the season opens. This is normally done by the companies that offer guided hunts or trips in advance. You should ask them if they did this.

  • These few ideas are just tips to help. There are many more that we could have listed, but most hunters already have a good understanding on how to hunt. The black tail deer guides and outfitters that offer trips and guided hunts will be able to answer any additional questions you may have.
