Alabama Turkey: Turkey is the largest of the game birds native to North America {including Alabama}. This game bird is also farm-raised for a year-round supply of meat. Turkeys were domesticated and bred by the Aztecs and Zuni Indians who not only hunted this game bird, but they also used them for adornments and charms. Turkeys were first seen by the Spanish conquerors on their trip to the New World soon after 1492, and in 1530 the Mexican species was introduced into Europe.

All varieties bred throughout the world today are descendants of the North American wild turkey, Meleagris gallopava, presumably from the Mexican stock. At least five subspecies of wild turkey have been recognized, ranging in original habitat from Mexico to northern New England and are a very popular game bird on hunting trips and guided hunts in Alabama. The colonists in New England in olden days discovered an abundant food supply in the wild turkey of the forests. They quickly started to hunt this game bird. Dating from the first American Thanksgiving, the turkey has become the traditional symbol of this American holiday. Although wild turkeys have become considerably reduced in number since the hunters of old, they are still on the game list of almost all states including Alabama and will most likely be offered by the hunting guide or outfitter that you hire for your next trip.

There is another genus in the family Meleagrididae, known as Agriocharis ocellata, or Osceola {eyelike-spotted} turkey. This native of the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico and nearby territory along with states with the U.S. is a creature of the dense forest.
