Georgia Alligator

Alligator: This big game is closely related to the crocodile. There are two species: the American alligator, Alligator mississipiensis, and the Chinese alligator, A. sinensis. Alligators live in lowland rivers, lakes, and marshes. In this case Georgia has many areas for the alligator to survive and it is also a popular big game for hunting guides and outfitters in that state. Each outfitter and guide has services that include planned trips and guided hunts. The American alligator is also found in other coastal plains from North Carolina to Texas; the Chinese alligator is confined to a small area in the lower Yangtze river valley.

Although the Georgia alligator closely resembles the American crocodile, they are classified in different families because of differences in the snout and teeth. The alligator has a broad snout, and its upper teeth markedly overlap the teeth of the lower jaw. The snout of the crocodile is tapered and the teeth are more in line. Each of this big game can quickly grab a hunter that is not paying attention. This is why it is so important to find good alligator hunting guides and outfitters that not only know the area, but that are very knowledgeable in how to hunt alligators in Georgia.

Before guides and outfitters started hunting the American alligators or the expansion of cities in the areas that alligators lived, they grew to a maximum length of over 19 feet {5.7 meters}. They now seldom grow more than 12 feet {3.6 meters” long. The average length of an adult is about 9 feet {2.7 meters}, and an alligator of this size weighs approximately 250 pounds {113 kg}. The females are usually 2 feet {0.6 meters} shorter than the males and are about half their weight. The Chinese alligator grows to 5 or 6 feet {1.5 – 1.8 meters}. Their smaller size does not mean that alligator hunting is not exciting. The Georgia outfitter or guide that you hire for a trip or guided hunt will most likely give you an experience that you will never forget as a sportsman.

In spring the female alligator builds a huge nest, in which she lays 30 to 70 eggs. When the young emerge, they are about 8 inches {20 cm} long. Alligators hunt at night, the young feeding on insects and small crustaceans, and the adults eating a variety of animals, including snakes, turtles, birds, and muskrats. They also have been known to attack humans and other big game, small game, and game birds. They eat little or nothing during their winter hibernation. Alligators live about 50 years. United States Weather

The Georgia alligator has been widely hunted for its tough and attractive hide. Moreover, much of its marshy habitat has been drained and many thousands of its young have been sold as pets. Because of these factors, the American alligator population has been greatly reduced over much of its range including Georgia, and it is now protected from hunting guides and outfitters in many of the southern United States. Alligators are classified in the order Crocodilia, family Alligatoridae, genus Alligator.
