Canada is the largest country in the Western Hemisphere. Like the United States, Canada is a young nation, with a short and exciting history. Canada covers the northern two fifths of the North American continent. With an area of over 3.8 million square miles, Canada is 2nd largest country.

From well within the Arctic Circle in the north to Lake Erie in the south, it stretches a distance of about 1,600 miles, and its extent from east to west is at some points more than a thousand miles longer. Off Canada’s east coast is the Atlantic Ocean, with Davis Strait. At the extreme east is Newfoundland with Labrador, which joined the Dominion in 1949. To the north Canada faces the Arctic Ocean with Hudson Bay. Alaska provides a land boundary to the northwest, and the Pacific Ocean washes the west coast. Canada is bounded on the south by the United States. Except for the Great Lakes and a short distance along the St. Lawrence River, there is no major natural boundary between the two countries.

The United States and Canada have real geographic unity. In the east the Appalachian Mountains extend across the border into Canada’s Maritime Provinces. The Great Plains of North America stretch north and northwest across Canada to the Arctic. And in the far west a series of mighty mountain ranges, including the towering Rockies, cross the Dominion and continue on into Alaska.
