Manitoba, Canada Licenses and Fees

Manitoba, Canada Regulations

Manitoba is a province of Canada and is rightly called the “Keystone Province” not only because of its central position, but also because of its place in the nation’s commerce and economy.

Although it is included among Canada’s Prairie Provinces, most of its territory lies outside the northwestern extension of the Central Plains, which run farther into Saskatchewan and Alberta. At the same time, the province has the flavor and spirit of the West and therefore differs greatly from Ontario and Quebec, its neighbor provinces to the east.

Manitoba is situated between Ontario, on the east, and Saskatchewan, on the west. To the south, beyond the International Boundary, are North Dakota and Minnesota, and due north is the District of Keewatin, in Canada’s Northwest Territories. In the northeast the province fronts upon Hudson Bay. Manitoba’s area of 246,512 square miles is not much less than that of the state of Texas. Less than 220,000 square miles consist of land area; the rest is made up of long chains of lakes and rivers. North of Winnipeg is Lake Winnipeg, with an area of Almost 9,500 square miles; to the west are Lake Manitoba and Lake Winnipegosis; and in the northern wilderness are hundreds of other lakes. Flowing into Hudson Bay in the northeast are the Seal, Churchill, Nelson, and Hayes rivers. To the South the Red River of the North and the Saskatchewan River flow into Lake Winnipeg.

In southern Manitoba near the Saskatchewan border the country is somewhat mountainous, with elevations of over two thousand feet. The farmlands lie east of this area, on the prairies and particularly in the fertile Red River Valley.

North of the grassy prairies, which cover a mere fraction of the province, thick forests and rocky bluffs appear between the long fingers of the lakes, and the lands become increasingly rough and uneven. To the east and north of Lake Winnipeg, Manitoba is covered by the rugged geological formation known as the Laurentian, or Canadian, Shield. This is a vast expanse of rock sprinkled with lakes, traversed by rivers, and heavily wooded in those areas where soil is available. In the far north, trees give way to low shrubs, and in the northeast the Shield falls away to the desolate Hudson Bay Lowlands.

As in the other Prairie Provinces, the air in Manitoba is dry and healthful. Cold winters are followed by short, warm summers, and the sun shines brightly throughout most of the year. In the far north, summers are very short, and daylight hours are few during the bitterly cold winter months. At times the precipitation falls well below the annual average of twenty inches, and the crops suffer. The snowfall is not particularly heavy.

Many types of small game and big game animals can be hunted in the providence. You should be able to find a Manitoba hunting guide or outfitter to help in your next trip.
