Arizona Black Bear

The American Black Bear: Inhabiting much of forested North America, which includes the state of Arizona and has many areas that hunting guides and outfitters can be located. The American black bear, Ursus americanus, is also found from northern Alaska east across Canada to Labrador and Newfoundland, and south trough much of Alaska, virtually all of Canada, and most of the United States {including Arizona} into central Mexico Nayarit and Tamaulipas states}. Many of these locations would make a great place for planning a trip or guided hunt for black bear. In some classifications, this big game is placed in a genus of its own as Euarctos americanus.

The Arizona black bear occurs in many color phases in addition to its usual glossy black coat, brownish muzzle, and small white patch on the chest. The most common alternate coloration is one of various shades of brown, with the reddish brown, or cinnamon, phase being quite common in the western United States; brown- and black-colored cubs may appear in the same litter. These colors help camouflage the Arizona black bear from hunting guides and outfitters in the area on big game hunts with clients. Other color phases include a blue, with a brownish muzzle, the blue being more precisely a bluish-black; and white or yellowish white, with brown eyes {not the red eyes of an albino}.

The blue phase, found in the region of Yukatat Bay and the St. Elias range in southeastern Alaska, is known locally as the glacier bear and is a big game that is very popular among hunting outfitters and guides in that area. Bear hunts in these types of areas make a great trip and many sportsmen plan them each year. The white phase, known as Kermode’s bear or the island white bear, is found along the coast of central British Columbia {Gribble Island} and another great place for a trip or bear hunt.

The Arizona black bear grows to about 6 feet {1.8 meters} in head and body length, plus a 6-inch {15 cm} tail, about 40 inches {102 cm} high at the shoulders, and usually 200 to 300 pounds {1bout 90 to 135 kg}, but up to about 600 pounds {about 270 kg} in weight can be achieved. This large size the black bear can get to makes it more appealing to the Arizona hunters seeking this big game animal.
