Cougar: This big game animal is also know as the mountain lion, Felis or Puma, concolor, large member of the cat family, Felidae. The cougar is found in Alaska and British Columbia, through the United States down to Patagonia. Its body can be six feet long, exclusive of its long tail. It can weigh over two-hundred and twenty pounds. This large size is one of the reasons that hunters plan trips or guided hunts for it. The thick fur is yellowish-red above, lighter on the sides, and reddish-white on the belly; the muzzle, chin, throat, breast, and insides of the legs are whitish. This camouflage helps hide this big game from other predators such as man. The head of the cougar of Alaska is relatively small, with a black spot above each eye. But this big game animal can see very well and uses its eye sight to find it’s pray from far off. It also has good hearing and hunts at night mostly, but does hunt in the daytime as well.

The Alaska cougar can live ten to twelve years depending on diet, food sources, and injuries that it may experience in its lifetime. The cougar is very strong and can bring down many larger animals such as a cow. Humans are rarely attacked, but there are several attacks each year in not just Alaska, but the lower states as well that do have cougars within their boarders. Usually the attacks are from hikers that are alone or a camper that has wandered off by himself. This is why when camping or hiking in Alaska or other states that have cougars in it, that you use the buddy system. Never be in the wilderness alone.

The female cougars bear one to six cubs in a litter; the young have dark brown sports on the back, and the tail is ringed. Cougars hunt small animals, mainly at night. Because ranchers suspect them of killing cattle, the animals have been hunted extensively in many parts of the United State to the point of having to be protected in a number of states. Other forms of food that this big game will hunt are bighorn sheep, skunks, deer, elk, porcupines, and other small game animals.
