The surface of Nebraska ranges from smooth to rough, even mountainous, with seven well-defined major topographic subdivisions: the western tablelands and lowlands, the Pierre plains [formerly called the Bad Lands}, the sandhills, the northern tablelands, the loess plains and hills, the Platte River lowland and the Missouri River lowland.

The climate is warm-temperate, and is characterized by sudden changes common ton inland regions. The atmosphere is dry, and gentle winds prevail. On the whole it is agreeable, exhilarating and healthful. The mean temperature for Nebraska is about 23 degrees in January and 75 degrees in July. The mean rainfall averages about twenty-three inches, being about twenty-eight inches in the eastern part and about eighteen inches in the western counties.
