Newfoundland / Labrador is a province of Canada. Attached to Newfoundland is Labrador, on the mainland, with an area of 110,000 square miles. Newfoundland is an island on the eastern side of the Gulf of Saint Lawrence, roughly triangular in form, with an area of 42,734 square miles; slightly greater than that of Ohio. The shores of the island are nearer to Ireland than any other point on the North American continent, thee distance being only 1,640 miles. The narrow Strait of Belle Isle separates Newfoundland from Labrador.

Nearly all the island has a rough surface, though only a part is mountainous, and the eleations ar not great. The southwestern coast line is in many places precipitous, some of the elevations reaching 2,000 feet. A few miles back from the ocean the land spreads back to the interior as an uneven tableland. Some of it is barren and a considerable part is heavily forested; but there is a considerable area of swamps, and there are many lakes and rivers.

Contrary to general belief, the climate is not so severe in winter as in some other parts of Canada, the surrounding water tending to modify it. For the same reason the summers are much cooler. The thermometer never records a summer temperature as high as 85 degrees; the average winter temperature at Saint John’s is 7 degrees. The northeast coast, however, is always colder, owing to the influence of the Labrador Current, which flows southward along that shore from Arctic regions.

Labrador is the mainland territory of the island province of Newfoundland and lies along the North Atlantic coast between the St. Lawrence and Hudson Strait, far to the north. On the west and south, Labrador is bounded by Quebec. The interior is a plateau that rises in the north to heights of several thousand feet. The land is a wilderness of spruce forest, lakes, rushing rivers, and swamps covering over 110,000 square miles. During the ice Ages, glaciers scraped the soil from the underling rock, and when the ice retreated, it left many hollow spots that filled with water.

Many types of small game and big game animals can be hunted in the providence. You should be able to find a Newfoundland / Labrador hunting guide or outfitter to help in your next trip.
