Terrain and Weather to Help Plan Your Next Saskatchewan, Canada Trip

Saskatchewan is one of Canada’s great Prairie Provinces. Saskatchewan lies west of Manitoba, east of Alberta, north of North Dakota, and Montana, and south of the Northwest Territory. The province covers a total area of over 250,000 square miles, over 13,000 square miles of which are inland water. Roughly rectangular in shape, it extends a total distance of 761 miles from north to south, narrowing slightly as it stretches northward from a southern border of 393 miles. Texas is the only American state larger than Saskatchewan.

In southern Saskatchewan the land rises toward the west, reaching a maximum altitude of more than 4,500 feet at Cypress Hills near the border of Alberta. This region is crossed by the South Saskatchewan and Qu’Appelle rivers. The Assiniboine, which rises in the eastern part of the region, flows southeastwardly into Manitoba, where it is joined by the Qu’Appelle. There are a few lakes, some of which are slat. The grassy prairies have been converted into millions of acres of farmland, extending to the horizon in every direction. Low hills slope down into sloughs, and valleys add to the general rolling aspect of the landscape.

To the north the roll of the land increases and more and more trees are seen. An increasingly large area is given over to range and pasture land. The branches of the Saskatchewan River combine and flow eastward into Manitoba. The name Saskatchewan is adapted from the Indian words for “swift water”.

Still farther north the land becomes rougher and rockier. There are extensive forests of fir, birch, and poplar and great, sprawling lakes. The Churchill River flows to the east, toward Hudson Bay. Reindeer Lake lies on the border of Manitoba, and Athabaska Lake spreads into Alberta. Northern Saskatchewan, covered by a part of the enormous geological formation known as the Laurentian Plateau, or Canadian Shield, has remained a virtual wilderness.

Northern Saskatchewan has short summers and long, harsh winters. In the south the summer days are long and hot, and the air is dry. Snows are welcome during the cold winters, for they add moisture to the soil. A rainfall of fifteen inches or more, properly distributed, can mean prosperity for Saskatchewan; but in some years large areas, particularly in the south, receive less than this amount. Besides the hazard of drought, there is the possibility that cold waves, windstorms, and hailstorms.

Roughly one third of the province is forested; making Saskatchewan a unique place to hunt and should be experienced at least once in a hunter’s life. The hunting guides and outfitters will be able to give advice on the better places to hunt in Saskatchewan, Canada.
Many types of small game and big game animals can be hunted in the providence. You should be able to find a Saskatchewan hunting guide or outfitter to help in your next trip.
