Terrain and Weather to Help Plan Your Next Alberta, Canada Trip

Alberta is a province of Canada, includes within its borders great expanses of rolling prairie, towering mountain peaks, and a northern wilderness in which modern growth are continuing to push forward the frontier of settlement and civilization.

Alberta covers an area of over 255,000 square miles in western Canada and is about the size of the state of Texas. The province is narrow at its southern border, but its width increases to the northwest and reaches a maximum of about four hundred miles. From north to south Alberta extends about 760 miles. The other Prairie Provinces, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, lie to the east; to the west is British Columbia and to the north the District of Mackenzie in the Northwest Territories. Alberta has a common boundary on the south with Montana.

Alberta’s slanting southwestern boundary runs through the Rocky Mountains, whose snow-capped peaks rise to elevations of over 12,000 feet. Toward the east smaller peaks are followed by rugged foothills, and the land flattens gradually into fairly level prairie – part of the great Central Plains of North America. The North and South Saskatchewan rivers, which unite in Saskatchewan, and the Peace and Athabaska rivers, which flow north, cut valleys across the province on their way from the western mountains. Northward from the southern boundary the prairie land becomes more fertile, and trees are increasingly numerous. A stretch of poor soils precedes the Peace River Country, with its small thick forests and its irregular expanses of rich grasslands. Still farther north, forests becomes more and more extensive, but with stunted trees, and there are few towns.

Alberta enjoys clear, sunny skies and dry, bracing air throughout most of the year. In summer the temperature in the central farm belt climbs to 70 degrees F. and sometimes reaches 100 degrees. Northern summers are warm but brief, and the winters are long, with stretches of subzero weather. In the south, warm Chinook winds from the southwest hasten the arrival of spring. Throughout most of Alberta annual precipitation is between 16 and 20 inches, but in the semiarid southeast rainfall diminishes to about 11 inches, which is inadequate for successful farming.

Many types of small game and big game animals can be hunted in the providence. You should be able to find a Alberta hunting guide or outfitter to help in your next trip.
