Hawaiian Partridge

Hawaiian Partridge: The partridge hunted in Hawaii is a fowl-like game bird that can also be found in temperate regions of North America, Eurasia, and Africa. The partridge is a plump bird abut 12 inches {30 cm} long and is found on the dinner table of outfitters and guides alike. Although capable of short swift flights, it is mainly ground-dwelling, feeding on grain, grass, berries, and insects. The swift speed that the Hawaiian partridge do have helps it escape from predators and sportsmen hunting for this game bird. The female lays from 8 to 10 eggs in a well-hidden nest, and the young are able to fly within two weeks. There are about ten species of partridge, belonging to the genera Perdix and Alectoris and are popular for hunting trips or guided hunts. Most may be recognized by a distinctive hoarse call.

The plumage of the true, or Old World, partridge has patterns of brown, buff, gray, black, and white. These colors help this game bird hide better and elude the outfitter or guide that is hunting it. The gray, or Hungarian, partridge, Perdix perdix, which was introduced into America, has a short reddish-brown tail, a rust-colored face, chestnut-barred sides, and a dark brown U-shaped mark on its abdomen. These colors are great for blending into the surroundings and it takes a skillful sportsman on a hunt to see it. The Hawaiian partridge inhabits open fields in the northern states and Canada. The only other American-bred partridge is the Indian chukar partridge, Alectoris gracea. Found in mountainous areas in the western states and Canada, it is sandy brown above and gray below and has a black band across its throat. Other game birds, such as the bobwhite and ruffed grouse, are sometimes incorrectly called partridges.
